The Warsaw Citadel is unique both in micro- and macroscale. The aim of this project was to emphesize the military character of the site
and at the same time propose new, clear spatial plan. The so far inaccessible terrain is supposed to open up and become public space for a recreational and educational use.
The character of the citadel is created by the nearby Wis³a river, high-volume fortifications and well-maintained moat - now functioning
as a municipal park. The new complex has been shaped in reference to these elements and to the old-time battlefield topography.
The newly-introduced elements directly or indirectly recall genuine trenches, barricades, fieldworks and fortifications. Strong,
geometrical solids shaped as overheading corridors partly roof the site, creating outdoor exposition space. Each span of the building
has been based on a communication shaft. The facade has been covered with vertical cut-out concrete profiles. |
