The design is a result of the limitations of the plot. The necessity of creating a barrier against the inconvenience of the railway traffic
and assuring the connection between separated areas forces the architect to optimise the solution both economically and socially.
A symbiotic connection between the block of flats and the passage with retail space is proposed as a metaphor of a hedge or a ribbon.
Live border + live bridge = hedge + passage
Two contrasting elements: mass of the residential building and lightweight connecting ribbon of retail passage join into a coherent
system with inner synergy. A 270 meter long building with 6 storeys introduces spatial order into the urban fabric of its surroundings.
The block frontage emphasizes the linear character of Lasten street with its elongated buildings
and communication system. The ribbon of a new passage, rising dynamicly upwards and over the railroad track seems to be solid,
bold and expressive, while the building's facade formed of lightweight materials seems to lessen the mass of the housing. Ephemeral materials - glass and foliage - make up the long and comparatively high walls of the building. Protruding balconies enliven the green mass. |
