The project's idea refers to the context of the location and the proper name of the planned investment. Regarding the unique character of the plot the intention was to create a building/exposition space coherent with its surroundings. The plot planned under the Africarium is set in the very centre of the Wroc³aw's Zoo, immersed in green. Therefore, the important thing was to find a solution that is non-aggressive and nearly invisible, merging into the background of trees and animals. The proposal is the artificial-topography kind of architecture, forming the building as landscape, in which the function is hidden under a "green slope". Owing to that the building itself disappears; looking from afar we can only see the landscape- a slope, overgrown with grass, which stays an integral part of the zoo.
The final shape of the building was defined using the Africa continent outline, that is visible in the plans. Adapting such a strong formal element brings out a symbolic and educational aspect, but also clarifies the idea. Giving the visitors a straight association right after entering the zoo makes the new pavilion recognizable.
The metaphorical meaning of the design refers to Africa as the "black land", immersed in life-giving waters of seas and oceans. This idea reflects in the distribution of function: in the overground part "the Africa land" is an atrium, surrounded by animal-exposing zones. The atrium also functions as recreation space, enabling the visitors to watch the animals from the outside. In the underground level "Africa continent" is the exposition hall, that gives an inside view on the water animals living in African reservoirs.
